Our featured theme exhibit, Once Upon a Fair, invites guests of all ages to embark on an imaginative exploration of the world of books. Chapter by chapter, visitors will enjoy engaging learning experiences, interactive photo opportunities, and hands-on activities designed to spark curiosity and creativity. Guiding everyone through each chapter is our friendly bookworm, Ollie, who brings the magic of storytelling to life.
The Spark of Imagination
Ollie begins the adventure by sharing how storybooks spark imagination over generations. Guests will discover the enduring influence of folktales, fables, and fairy tales, learning how these stories have traveled through time and across cultures. With Ollie’s unique perspective, visitors will delve into classic tales including Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Cinderella, Pinocchio, The World of Winnie the Pooh, and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Celebrating Children's Literature
The exhibit takes a nostalgic look at some of the most beloved children’s books from the past fifty years. Guests will discover the authors and illustrators who have influenced generations and explore local connections to literary figures such as L. Frank Baum and Dr. Seuss. This section highlights the impact of storytelling on young readers and celebrates the rich history of children’s literature.
Stories and Perspectives
Ollie continues the journey by offering a fresh take on stories ranging from Peter Rabbit and Sherlock Holmes to Jules Verne’s San Diego connection. Recognizing that every reader brings their own perspective, the exhibit explores how comic books, graphic novels, and pop-up books can inspire even reluctant readers to engage with stories.
Community Partnerships and Personal Stories
The experience is therefore enriched by the involvement of community partners, including local library systems, the San Diego Council on Literacy, Scholastic Books, KPBS, Dr. Seuss Enterprises, and local performance groups, authors, illustrators, and collaborators. Together, they help Ollie guide guests through “My Fair Story,” where each visitor’s personal “Once Upon a Time” and “Day in the Life” at the Fair culminates in their own “Happily Ever After.”
