What makes a character truly unforgettable? Why do some heroes, villains, and sidekicks stay with us for years while others disappear from memory the moment a story ends? In this engaging behind-the-scenes presentation, character designer Nex Vierling reveals the secrets of creating characters that leave a lasting impression.
Drawing from beloved manga, anime, graphic novels, and comics, Nex explores how every visual choice—silhouette, facial expression, costume design, posture, and body language—serves as a powerful storytelling tool. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how artists communicate personality, emotion, motivation, and narrative through design alone. Whether you're an aspiring artist, a dedicated fan, or simply curious about the creative process, this session will transform the way you view the characters you encounter on the page and screen.
Nex Vierling is Studio Skye-Tiger Comics’ resident teenage prodigy and one of the most exciting emerging talents in the comics industry today. Discovered by Ray Anthony-Height at a San Diego Comic-Con event in 2023, Nex quickly entered a mentorship that helped launch a remarkable professional career. Since then, Nex has become one of the few teenagers since the 1970s to contribute to an official DC Comics property, making their debut as an inker on The Power Company: Recharged #1 – All In.
A graduate of the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, Nex combines strong traditional art foundations with a passion for manga and anime. Their work is heavily influenced by acclaimed horror manga creator Junji Ito, who has personally praised Nex’s artistic talent.
