Capturing Florals with Japanese Brush Painting

Date: July 02, 2026
Time: 2:00 PM - 2:45 PM
Location(s):
Join Gaye Lingley and members of the Friends of Sumi-e for a captivating demonstration of traditional Japanese brush painting inspired by the elegant Japonica camellia. Throughout this live session, artists will create expressive floral compositions in real time, showcasing the delicate techniques, fluid brushwork, and mindful artistry that define the Sumi-e tradition. Attendees will gain insight into how simple yet intentional strokes can capture the essence of nature, emphasizing balance, form, and the beauty of imperfection. The Friends of Sumi-e, formed in 2022 through the merger of two long-standing San Diego brush painting groups—Washu-Kai and Taka Sumi-e, both established in the early 2000s—continue to preserve and share this meaningful art form with the community. This presentation offers a unique opportunity to observe masterful technique in action while learning about the cultural heritage and contemporary practice of Japanese ink painting.
