Digital Infrared Photography

Date: June 14, 2025
Time: 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

with Will Gibson

Location(s):
Will Gibson will give us a short primer on how infrared is different from other styles of photography, and the options involved in how to convert a digital camera to infrared, including the difference between using a DSLR and a mirrorless body. His camera is a Canon 5D Mk2 now, but he will also talk about his use of Maco 820C infrared film in the early 2000’s, its demise soon after, and his path in the last three years, exploring images that we cannot see with our own eyes.
Will turned his photographic hobby into a vocation in 1979. He opened his own studio a year later. By 1999, the business was a full service commercial studio with a full wet lab and one stop desktop publishing. What followed was a stint based in Columbus, OH traveling the art fair circuit extensively, photographing along the way. Returning in 2003, he began teaching photography at Palomar College and UCSD Extension. He taught over 14 separate course titles including portraiture, alternative processes and commercial photography. Will co-founded the PhotoArts Group in 2003, co-produced six Best of Nature Photo Competitions at the San Diego Natural History Museum, and has given workshops and been a speaker and juror at photo organizations in San Diego. He is a member of the SDMA Artist Guild and the Oceanside Museum of Art Artist Alliance. He currently shows his work at his Escondido Studio and other venues around the county.
