Creative Photography - Concept to Capture: A Deeper Dive

Date: June 14, 2025
Time: 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM

with James Woodward

Location(s):

James Woodward will guide the audience through the creative journey behind several of his images—from the initial spark of an idea to the decisive moment of pressing the shutter release. He refers to this process as the "method to my madness."

James will discuss the importance of pre-visualization: imagining the final image before the camera is even touched. He’ll explore how key decisions—such as subject, foreground, background, accessories, and lighting—are all made in advance to shape the direction of the shoot.

Attendees will gain insight into how James "works the image," refining each element until he captures that final, intentional frame. Many of the images featured in the talk involve minimal Photoshop work beyond basic RAW processing, highlighting his commitment to getting it right in-camera.

This behind-the-scenes look offers photographers and creatives a valuable window into James’s thoughtful, hands-on approach to image-making.

With over 35 years of experience, James Woodward is a seasoned commercial and advertising photographer whose work spans a wide range of industries, including technology, retail, jewelry, manufacturing, music, talent, events, and multimedia. His images have appeared on numerous magazine covers both locally and nationally, earning him multiple awards for creative and technical excellence.

Known for his love of studio work, James values the control and precision it offers. He was an early adopter of digital photography and has been working with Photoshop since version 2.5—an innovation that, in his words, “unlocked the handcuffs” of film. While he embraces digital tools, he still enjoys the creative challenge of producing compelling in-camera images with minimal post-processing.

Now semi-retired, James continues to do what he loves most: creating images, making prints, and appreciating the artistry of photography.
