Time: 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM

WITH ANDREW HERTEL

Location(s):

Join Andrew Hertel for a two-part session on the art of black and white photography. In the first half, “The Art & Vision of Black and White Photography,” Andrew will share how and why he chooses to work in black and white, focusing on composition, light, mood, and how a strong vision can elevate a photograph beyond just removing color. He’ll also discuss the role of patience and presence when creating meaningful work in nature.

In the second part, Andrew will walk through his black and white editing process using Lightroom and Photoshop. He’ll demonstrate how he approaches tonal adjustments, contrast, and selective dodging and burning to refine an image, offering practical tips that attendees can apply to their own work.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Andrew Hertel is a fine art black and white nature photographer based in San Diego. With a deep connection to the natural world, he creates images that reflect solitude, mood, and the quiet beauty found in remote and rugged landscapes. His work has been exhibited across the western United States and is collected by nature lovers who resonate with the emotional impact of his imagery. Andrew’s photography is rooted in experience—most of his images are created while hiking, camping, or exploring by motorcycle. His approach is simple but intentional, focusing on light, form, and composition to craft timeless photographs. Beyond the camera, Andrew enjoys sharing his process and inspiring others to see the world more thoughtfully through photography.
