Stripes and Lines, 9:00PM
Progressive indie rockers Stripes and Lines have been packing San Diego venues for nearly four years, and are now touring the U.S.
Stripes and Lines bring the old and new together with hints of Built To Spill; a driving rhythm section reminiscent of U2 or The Police; and a touch of Velvet Underground; topped off with four-part vocal harmonies that suggest the great vocalists of the '60s.
Sold-out shows with Company of Thieves and Fiction Family (members of Switchfoot and Nickel Creek) as well as performances with Manzarek-Rogers (featuring Ray Manzarek of the Doors); Switchfoot; Bedouin Soundclash; The Whigs; The Cat Empire; and more, have further confirmed Stripes and Lines one of the top bands to watch in San Diego. The band is a regular headliner at the Belly Up Tavern as well as numerous other Southern California venues including Los Angeles’ Viper Room and El Rey Theater. They’ve been featured on both FM 94.9 and 91X, San Diego’s top stations for new and independent music.
Stripes and Lines were also selected by LiveNation to perform at Los Angeles’ Wiltern Theater as part of the debut of their Dolby 5.1 / 1080HD internet video broadcast platform.
On their new CD, Mutiny on the Coast of Excess, plus their self-titled EP, they tackle the indie-rock genre with passion and creativity, blending thumping, up-tempo rockers with hints of the past that draw the audience in and keep them listening.
Vokab Kompany, 7:30PM
San Diego band Vokab Kompany (San Diego Music Award “Best Hip Hop” act 2011) began gaining national notoriety based on the success of their song “So Bright” and it’s appearance in international car company KIA with their 2010 Summer Sales Event Commercial and on The Today Show with Al Roker. The success continued into 2011 with another national commercial, collaborating on the single “Burn it Down” with fellow band mate; saxophonist Jesse Malloy, and his production duo ‘Crush Effect’. Their collaborations with artists such as; Lincoln Parish (Cage The Elephant), Killah Priest (Wu Tang), The Grouch and Luckyiam (Living Legends), A-Plus (Hieroglyphics), Main Flow (Mood), Lateef the Truthspeaker, Dj Vadim, Random Rab, Jboogie, Mutaytor, Souleye, RadioActive (Spearhead) and Signal Path have also helped push this young band into the national spotlight.
Inspired Flight, 5:30PM
Based in San Diego, California, Inspired Flight fuses the talents of master turntablist, OpenOptics (Eric Poline), and seasoned guitarist/songwriter, Chavez (Gabe Lehner), who each discovered a passion for music at a very young age by falling in love with golden-era hip-hop. As teenagers, OpenOptics became obsessed with turntables, collecting records, and DJ’ing, while Chavez became fixated on blues guitar, British rock, and songwriting. They met in 2006 when Chavez hired OpenOptics to do scratching on an electronica album he was making. The fusion of personalities, backgrounds, and musical interests provided the perfect balance for creating fresh, thought-provoking sounds, and what began as a casual collaboration quickly evolved into Inspired Flight. An Inspired Flight show features live vocals and performance on guitar, keyboards, turntables, kalimbas, and melodica, used with multiple laptops and MIDI controllers. The euphoric, dance-inducing beats of an iF show merge what is mostly original production with tasteful and strategic sampling, leaving audiences "blissed out" and craving more.
Since Inspired Flight's creation in 2007, the group has achieved many impressive feats. Inspired Flight has woven remixes for several artists, and got much acclaim for their Wonderwall Remix as it held No. 1 on the Hype Machine's popular chart for three consecutive days. In 2008 iF released a four-song EP titled, Through Sight And Sound, to much critical acclaim, and in 2010, released a debut album, We All Want To Fly. The duo has also began touring outside of San Diego, and emerging onto the festival scene playing Coachella, Sunfest, Bella Music Fest, Lightning In A Bottle, and Re:Generation.
Los Beautiful Beasts, 4:00PM
Los Beautiful Beasts are an intergalactic, plasma breathing ally of amigos that have broken more hearts throughout the known universe than any being could ever conceive. On planet Earth they appear to be human yet they sound otherworldly. The sextets original music has evolved throughout the years and is reflective their many strange albeit illuminating experiences in the North County of San Diego. Whether they are Angels, Demons, or something else, we as humans can only guess and let ourselves be filled with their sonic audio riddle that may save us all.
