Belly Up Blues Festival

June 23, 2011

Hours:
2:30-10:00PM

Location: Coors Light Rock-On Stage

Each Thursday of the Fair, enjoy a music festival brought to you by the Belly Up nightclub. The internationally acclaimed Belly Up, located in Solana Beach, has a long history of bringing great live music to San Diego.

Today is the blues music festival, made up of some of southern California's leading blues bands. They draw from the rich long history of the blues, while adding their own embellishments signatures to the truly American genre.

Don't make the mistake of thinking of Rod Piazza as one of the "young turks" of the blues, or part of the "new generation" of blues greats. At this point in his career, Piazza has been recording longer than his mentor George "Harmonica" Smith did, or Sonny Boy Williamson (either of them!), or Big Walter Horton. Piazza is a tried-and-true, dyed-in-the-wool blues veteran with credentials that are second to none. Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers will headline this festival at 9:00PM.

James Harman, who performs at 7:30PM, was born and raised in Anniston, Alabama. He quickly picked up on the black blues and soul music being played on juke boxes and the radio and sang in the church choir until age
16 when his family moved to Panama City Florida, where he found himself surrounded by like-minded blues lovers. Wearing a fake moustache, young James slipped into a still quite segregated black nightclub to see Little Junior Parker
