Performance Contests: Oratorical Competition
 San Diego County students, from kindergarten through grade 12, competed for ribbons, cash and prizes in the fifth annual Oratorical Competition: Speaking of Music at the 2009 San Diego County Fair.
Individuals or groups up to three members performed an oration (not a song), such as original material, a famous speech, a poem or a story, vying for cash prizes and regional recognition.

First place: $300.00
Second place: $225.00
Third place: $150.00

2nd place - Christopher Wong; 13 years old; Heritage Christian School in San Diego;
title of presentation - "The Power of Music"
3rd place - J. P. Mears, 13 years old; Vista Magnet Middle School in Vista;

High School Division:
1st place - Prashant Bhat, 17 years old, Carlsbad High School in Carlsbad;
title of presentation - "Keynote speaker Smokey Robinson's Address at the Berklee School of Music"
2nd place - Carly Fehlberg, 15 years old, Heritage Christian School in San Diego;
title of presentation - "The Composer is Dead"
3rd place - Jeriel and Jarah Burke, 15 years old, Hilltop Academy in Chula Vista;
title of presentation - "The Music Man"
